FORT COLLINS, CO – South Dakota State was the only team Thursday to reach double figures in runs on Day 1 on the 2023 NISC, moving past Tarleton State.

Lindsey Culver got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning as SDSU took the lead; Emma Osmundson added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. A single by Rozelyn Carillo brought in another run in the second inning, and Jocelyn Carillo’s two-run home run made it 5-0.

After a rain delay in the third inning, Allison Yoder drew a bases-loaded walk as the Jackrabbits (38-17) moved ahead, 6-0. Tarleton State jumped into the scoring mix in the fourth, as Katy Schaefer hit a double to score Kayla Wallace and Austin Germain added a sacrifice fly. With the score 6-2, the Texans made it very interesting with a two-run homer from Jordan Dickerson, her fourth of the year, to pull Tarleton State within 6-4.

It became a 7-4 lead for SDSU in the fourth on a Osmundson single that plated Jocelyn Carillo; Cheyanne Masterson made it 8-4 with an RBI single, and the lead ballooned to 10-4 on a two-run triple from Mia Jarecki. Culver closed the SDSU scoring with a solo home run.

South Dakota State’s Tori Kniesche (23-6) struck out 12 batters, working a complete game around the rain delay. The Jackrabbits will play Iowa on Friday in the winner’s bracket, while the Texans (30-28) face UC Davis in the loser’s bracket.
